Direct Primary Care (DPC) is a type of primary care relationship established between a physician and a patient that does not involve insurance transactions. In a Direct Primary Care practice the physician provides ongoing primary care services and the patient pays a retainer fee in exchange for those services provided. The direct primary care (DPC) model gives family physicians a meaningful alternative to fee-for-service insurance billing, typically by charging patients a monthly, quarterly, or annual fee (i.e., a retainer). DPC practices suggest that patients acquire a high-deductible wraparound policy to cover catastrophic events like hospitalizations. Direct primary care benefits patients by providing substantial savings and a greater degree of access to, and time with, physicians.
